The Sights and Sounds of Winnipeg

Sep 5, 2017

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, always hits a high note with student music groups. A thriving arts scene, world-renowned performance groups, cultural landmarks, museums and galleries make this centrally located city a living classroom you can’t find anywhere else. Winnipeg’s music institutions include the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, while historically it boasts rock ‘n’ roll alumni such as Burton Cummings and The Guess Who, Crash Test Dummies and Neil Young.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is known for its diverse programming, from masterworks and pop to experimental and family-oriented shows. The Destination WSO program allows students to pull back the curtain on a classic performance and gain insight as to what it takes to be in the symphony. Students will observe a dress rehearsal and be invited for a Q&A with the conductor, plus take in a pre-performance chat to learn about the work before it is performed.

Choir workshops and performance opportunities abound with reputable groups such as the Manitoba Opera, Winnipeg Singers and other choirs. For bands, Winnipeg offers exchange opportunities with local schools; students will learn from other educators and play with peers who have a common interest. Among the local seminars and concerts is the Optimist International Band Festival, where your band can perform and work with an adjudicator. Plus, you’ll connect with band programs across Canada. The 2019 festival dates are February 19 – 22 (concert bands) and February 27 – March 2 (jazz bands).

When it comes to selecting performance venues, Winnipeg’s diverse options include the neoclassical Manitoba Legislative building and Union Station (perfect for choirs), numerous venues at The Forks, the lofty St. Boniface Cathedral and even Assiniboine Park Zoo.
