Ford’s Theatre presents the musical The Wiz, a Tony Award-winning, soul-infused journey through Oz, March 9 – May 12, 2018. In this adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s magical novel, Dorothy is whisked away by a tornado to the fanciful land of Oz. There, she and her sidekicks encounter Munchkins, flying monkeys and a power-hungry witch named Evillene, who vows to destroy them.
Winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, The Wiz is a musical feast featuring soul, gospel, R&B and pop.
“The Wiz is the traditional Wizard of Oz story told in a unique way,” said director Kent Gash. “It is a coming-of-age story of friendship and doing the right thing that’s set to a vivacious score and filled with great dance, color, energy and imagination. Dorothy is always smart, resourceful and never unkind. These are the things we need from our young people, and we need to see more of on stage. It is a celebration; it is a party. Everyone—from age 8 to age 80—will have a good time when they come along on this joyful journey through Oz.”
Introduce your students to this classic American musical in a historic theatre unlike any other.
