4 Reasons ‘Canada’s World Museum’ is Worth Traveling To

Nov 12, 2024

Egyptian mummies. Towering dinosaurs. Classical sculptures. Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum—or, as locals know it, ROM—truly has it all.

Opened in 1914, ROM is Canada’s biggest and most comprehensive museum with a world-class collection of 18 million artworks, artifacts, and natural history specimens. And yet, as impressive as that is, a museum of this size and scope can be intimidating to even the most avid traveller, let alone a teacher with two dozen students in tow.

Fortunately, ROM has plenty of programs, activities, and galleries kids of all ages love—and make the trip to Toronto totally worth it.

Guided Tour: A Song of Creatures and Cultures

From the hyperpop anthems of Charli xcx to the mating songs of birds, music is a cultural force and natural phenomenon. And in this exciting, galleries-spanning tour, students learn why music resonates—and how it’s all connected.

A Performance Among the Ancients

Sure, Carnegie Hall is cool. But imagine students dancing underneath the shadow of a massive herbivorous dinosaur. Or playing jazz within sight of bodhisattvas from 12th-century China. At ROM, students have the chance to perform on one of the world’s most interesting stages for a crowd as diverse and interesting as the Museum’s collections.

Amazing ROM

This popular program takes students on a whirlwind scavenger hunt through the museum, where they’ll encounter prehistoric beasts, ancient warriors, and ROM’s famous bat cave. Better still, students will learn how to work together and have fun.

Hands-On Biodiversity Gallery

Mossy frogs. Snakeskin. A shark jaw you can hold. With a mix of touchable specimens and interactive displays, the Patrick and Barbara Keenan Family Gallery of Hands-on Biodiversity invites students to explore the incredible interdependence of plants and animals with the help of the Museum’s trained facilitators.
