SYTA Youth Foundation Programs Accepting Applications

Apr 14, 2026

The SYTA Youth Foundation’s (SYF) mission is to connect youth with the resources required for travel experiences that will inspire them to be confident, connected, and globally responsible citizens.

We believe that TRAVEL CHANGES YOUNG LIVES FOR GOOD, and to that end, the SYTA Youth Foundation strives to provide access to travel opportunities for the maximum number of young people that would otherwise be unattainable due to family or financial challenges. This is done through a few programs, multiple of which are accepting applications right now.

Silver Lining Program

The SYTA Youth Foundation’s Silver Lining Program was created in 2006 to recognize a group of deserving students who have demonstrated through their action, intention, or circumstance the desire to expand their awareness, creating a dramatic life change.

The Silver Lining program partners with SYTA’s Annual Conference host city—this year, it’s Pittsburgh, PA—to provide a two night/three day travel experience for youth to participate in an educational trip that combines unique experiences and curriculum.

What does this program include? The SYTA Youth Foundation donors and program hosts will cover all program costs (within approved budget). They will work with a certified student planner/tour operator to provide transportation, student and trip insurance, admission to all attractions, accommodations and meals.

Groups must be within a two hour drive of the SYTA Annual Conference host city. For 2026, this is Pittsburgh, PA. Apply now!

DC Rite of Passage

Together, the American Experience Foundation (AEF), Educational Tours, Inc (ETI) and the SYTA Youth Foundation (SYF) believe a trip to the nation’s capital is a rite of passage into high school for those in 8th grade. By visiting Washington, DC, these students will receive an enriched education experience and deepen their knowledge of U.S. history.

For many students across the country, a trip like this is not available to them for a variety of reasons, and that is where AEF and SYF bridge the gap through our DC Rite of Passage program. We work with our partners to develop a multi-day/night stay itinerary that is comprised of student-friendly and must-see attractions, national parks and monuments, and experiences unique to Washington DC.

We are now accepting applications for 2027 DC Rite of Passage program! The group that is selected will travel in the Spring of 2027 – travel dates to be determined based on availability in Washington DC and the group’s availability.

World is a Classroom Essay Contest

Do your students have a story to tell about their favorite trip, and what they learned from it? Perhaps they experienced how different it is to live in France while visiting Paris with their high school French class? How about the time they learned Canadian history while traveling to one of the country’s national monuments? Maybe they learned about conservation efforts while visiting a local aquarium!

Students who write an essay describing what they learned and how they were impacted by travel could earn a cash scholarship of up to $1,500.00 USD! The other top four essay entries will also receive a cash scholarship of $1,000.00 USD! The SYTA Youth Foundation offers scholarships to students who use their creativity to compose an article or speech that illustrates a student travel experience.

The 2026 application period is open now through April 24. Have students apply here.
