At Colonial Williamsburg, archaeologists, historians and other experts actively uncover the past to better inform the future. Where some see patches of ordinary ground, they see opportunities for discovery. Beneath this ground, they continuously uncover new chapters that expand our understanding of life during our nation’s founding.
This year, the Foundation opened the Campbell Archaeology Center, a state-of-the-art facility featuring modern laboratories, specialized equipment, curated collections and dedicated learning spaces. Here, guests can observe and interact with archaeologists as they clean, study and analyze artifacts that help uncover the stories of the past. Through the Center’s hands-on learning labs, students can work alongside archaeology professionals, exploring the methods, discoveries and historical evidence that bring history to life.
Evidence like archaeological discoveries underpin the work of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The powder magazine, constructed to store arms and ammunition dispatched from London for the defense of the colony, is nearing the completion of a months-long renovation. Guided by archaeological evidence and historic images, Colonial Williamsburg’s Architectural Preservation and Research team is restoring the building’s original eighteenth-century casement and lunette windows. This work reflects the 100 years of the Foundation’s commitment to bringing history to life through research, conservation, and preservation.
