Ottawa Is Built for Student Groups

Oct 6, 2026

The best student trips do more than take learning outside the classroom. They help students connect what they study with real places, people and stories, making history tangible, culture personal and discovery exciting. Ottawa does just that.

Canada’s capital has long been one of Canada’s most popular destinations for student travel. It combines national museums, Canadian history, Indigenous experiences, government and democracy, outdoor adventure and plenty of pure fun in a compact, accessible destination.

Ottawa Tourism also works with educators and tour operators to support safe, engaging and easy-to-plan itineraries, with student-ready experiences, products and services that make planning simpler from start to finish.

Where learning comes to life

For students studying Canadian history, civics, science, art or culture, a trip to Ottawa can transform subjects they’ve encountered in textbooks into experiences they can see, hear and touch. A visit to Parliament introduces students to Canadian democracy in the very place where it happens. They can explore the institutions, personalities and debates that have shaped the country, then expand the lesson through experiences at places such as the Supreme Court of Canada, Rideau Hall and historic sites throughout the capital.

Then there are the museums. Ottawa is home to seven of Canada’s national museums, giving student groups an extraordinary opportunity to explore an entire country in one destination.

At the Canadian Museum of History, students can travel through more than 15,000 years of Canadian history. The Canadian War Museum brings the country’s military history to life through artifacts, personal stories, art, photographs and interactive presentations. The Canadian Museum of Nature opens windows onto everything from dinosaurs and mammals to minerals, birds and the Arctic.

Science and technology become hands-on at the Canada Science and Technology Museum, while the Canada Aviation and Space Museum lets students get close to an extraordinary collection of aircraft and explore Canada’s achievements in aviation and space. At the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, learning happens on a working farm. And the National Gallery of Canada introduces young visitors to Canadian, Indigenous and international art in one of the country’s great cultural institutions.

These institutions are complemented by attractions such as the Bank of Canada Museum, where interactive exhibits make economics accessible and engaging, as well as the Ottawa Art Gallery, Bytown Museum, Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum and Royal Canadian Mint.

Indigenous stories and experiences

A student visit to Canada’s capital also creates important opportunities to understand that Ottawa’s story began long before it became a capital. Ottawa is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Anishinabeg Algonquin Nation. Indigenous-led experiences can introduce students to the land, waterways and landmarks of the region through Indigenous perspectives and storytelling.

Get outside and explore

Not every lesson needs four walls. Ottawa’s extensive pathways and outdoor spaces make it easy to add active experiences to a student itinerary. A guided bike tour can turn sightseeing into an adventure, taking students along the Rideau Canal, Ottawa River and through neighbourhoods and national sites while experiencing the capital from a completely different perspective.

In 2027, Ottawa welcomes SYTA

That mix of educational depth, hands-on discovery and easy-to-plan experiences is exactly what Ottawa will showcase in August 2027, when the Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA) Annual Conference comes to Canada’s capital from August 13–16. The event will bring student and youth travel professionals to Ottawa, giving the city an opportunity to show firsthand how well it supports memorable, and easy-to-plan, student group experiences.

Ottawa is ready to welcome SYTA attendees with the experiences and support their student group clients are looking for: extraordinary educational programming, world-class museums, compelling Indigenous perspectives, outdoor adventure and an experienced tourism community ready to welcome young travellers.
