They gotta eat, but airport food is expensive. And often loaded with sugar.
It’s easy for students to toss snacks in a bag, but you don’t want TSA telling them they can’t bring those snacks past security. Avoid the need for students to throw away their snacks—and definitely avoid students shoving as much as they can in their mouths before making their way through the security line. Share these TSA-approved healthy snack ideas with your travelers.
Apples and Peanut Butter
If students aren’t allergic to peanuts, small tubes of peanut butter go great with apples. The apple will satisfy a sweet tooth, and the protein in the peanut butter will help sustain students. Also consider dried apple slices.
Bananas by themselves are a bit slimy for planes—and what do you do with the peel? Banana bread keeps well and is filling, especially smeared with peanut butter, almond butter or Nutella. Also consider oat muffins.
Granola bars are flight staples. They’re easy to pack, easy to eat and loaded with protein, if you get the right kind.
Forget bags of chips! Popcorn, when popped right, is a healthier snack.
Fill a container with cheese, deli meats, mixed nuts or crackers. Frozen grapes will help keep everything cool.
Veggies and Hummus
Toss some veggies—such as carrots, celery and bell peppers—in a Mason jar. Leave some room at the top for an empty applesauce container filled with hummus. The fiber in the vegetables and the protein in the hummus will help your students feel full longer.
